Elne
Elne is set atop a hill a few kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea. Elne is an ancient fortified town and was once the capital of Roussillon. The main attraction here is the cathedral of Ste-Eulalie, which was the seat of the Bishops of Roussillon until they moved to Perpignan in 1602. The cloister is the highlight of a visit to Elne, it is built of CÈret marble. There are a number of places to stay here and a good number of restaurants, so a stop here on the way to the coast is very worth while.
